Our History

Building Crown Mansion

General Noel Money had a profound impact on the establishment of Qualicum Beach. Born in Montreal and educated in England, General Money first visited Qualicum Beach in July of 1913 on a fishing trip.

He was so enamored with the area that he purchased a large parcel of land. He returned to England after engaging to have his home built for his return to Qualicum Beach.

When the First World War broke out, he rejoined his old regiment in 1915 at the age of 48. He returned to Qualicum Beach when the war ended.

In 2011, Crown Mansion opened Butler’s, a fine dining restaurant utilizing the Brown family’s elegant music room, dining room, and kitchen. The restaurant was refitted and upgraded to The Sapphire Room in 2019. The menu is inspired by local
ingredients, and a West Coast fare that is unmatched on Vancouver Island.

As an interesting coincidence, relative to the “Crown” in Crown Mansion, his wife, Maud Money’s father was Keeper of the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London. After General Money’s death, the Mansion and surrounding property had a few owners, including the Brown family, for over 40 years. In 2002 the property was sold to the owners of Crown Isle Resort & Golf Community.
